The lamp producer Luce plan was founded in 1978 by designer Sandra Severi, architect Paolo Rizatto and light designer Riccardo Sarfatti.
Paolo Rizzato was born in Milan in 1941. Before becoming increasingly occupied with lamp design, he worked as a freelance architect and designer, designing, amongst other things, a residential home in Novara and a care home in Milan.
Riccardo Sarfatti is the son of Gino Sarfatti, who founded the light company Arteluce in Milan in 1939, which was know as the leader of modern light in the 1950s.
Arteluce was taken over by the company Flos in 1974, but still produces under the old company name.
Riccardo Sarfatti worked together with his father until Luceplan was founded. His father withdrew from the company after its take-over by Flos, but remained in the company as a designer until his death in 1985.
Luceplan designs and produces lamps for inside and outside use, intended to increase quality of life with their design and functionality. Not only a timeless design is of importance to Luceplan, but also saving energy whilst simultaneously maximising power.
The selection of materials and the construction itself both ensure high longevity and timelessness.
Luceplan-lamps are easy to clean due to their design and thus promise great user acceptance for many years.
A lamp must fulfil many factors besides simply lighting: interesting design, safety when it comes to electricity, mobility, overheating control, simple handling, optimum energy consumption and light usage, and last but not least environment friendliness, which begins with its packaging. In their initial years, Luceplan worked on large scale projects, which found international recognition.
This is how lighting for Malpensa airport in Milan or the Goldhill Center in Singapur came about. These lamps formed the base for those lamps which were marketed in the 80s and thus made available to a larger audience. These can all be ordered via the online- shop. Some of the most famous lamps are: D7(1981), Berenice, Titania, TIBIBI(1993) and the lamp series Ceilingwall.
Further designers, besides the already mentioned, include: Alberto Meda, Sandro Colbertaldo, Paolo Longhi and Diego Rossi. For Alberto Medas lamp series Metropoli, Luceplan won the 1994 design prize Compasso d`Oro.
