The lamp company Belux was founded in 1970 by Thomas Egloff from Switzerland. Beluxs main aim involves combining good light quality with light usage as a creative element in rooms.
Architecture and light should fuse to become one and put each other in the lime-light, creating a joint atmosphere. Belux lights and lamps are suitable for commercial and private use.
The constantly ongoing research and development, combined with the cooperation with international designers, leads to ever new innovative lighting concepts. The joint work with Swiss designer Hannes Wettstein brought about the breakthrough lighting system Metro in 1982- the first low-voltage wire system.
The small lamp bodies on the spun wire soon became a much sought-after object, which carried out its victory march in shops, hotels and private homes. Many other companies copied these lamps on wire, and soon they were available online. In the same year, Belux took over the licence for Memphis, the Italian design group
Ettore Sottsass and Michele de Lucchi were part of this company, which produced extravagant pieces of furniture.
In 1984 Belux shone with yet another novelty: in order to give product development a boost, the lamp specialists hosted a design competition for lamps.
A jury of prominent designers evaluated hundreds of designs from young and aspiring designers, from which several series productions were created, such as the lamps Tubo and Lifto.
A wandering exhibition with the name Private Light went travelling in 1992. This introduced lights and lamps to a worldwide audience on an experimental basis. Objects by Danny Lane, Ron Arad, Matteo Thun and Reto Schöpfer were thus given worldwide attention. The latter in particular created the ingenious and energy saving fluorescent lamp, which didnt have to hide in private rooms anymore. Today, Belux is also connected with the names Frank Gehry, Hella Jongerius and Herzog& deMeuron.
Since then, technically mature products have enriched many areas of private and commercial life- and that at a level of the highest quality.
In the year 2001 the company Vitra was found as a suitable partner to ensure the succession regulation.
After 30 years of Thomas Egloffs work, this renowned furniture producer opened up completely new possibilities of production, offered new markets and bought about further contacts to designers who enrich Beluxs name.
