Arco was found in 1904 by Wouter van Ast as a shop for books and pictures. After one year it was altered into a fabric for blocks and finally in 2005 Arco celebrated its 100th birthday. Arco had to fight against obstacles that seemed to be insuperable and also had to develop steadily to reach their aim which was to be one of the leading Dutch furniture producers. Arco started its carrier with little tables and extended its assortment with dining tables.
In the 70iesWillem van Ast led Arco to big success by bringing his modern and minimalist ideas in. From this point on Arco focussed on producing contemporary wooden furniture.
Also external designers like Arnold Merckx made their contribution to the advancement of the formerly small company called Arco. An own identity was necessary to be in business on a continuing basis and not to be displaced by other producers of wooden furniture.
Therefore Arco amplified its clientele that mainly enveloped the private living quarters and tried to get appointments for the furnishing of complete projects. By doing that Arco was very successful as Willem van Ast, holder/director and designer, can claim proudly. Arco followed their strategy to work with external designers like Burkhard Vogtherr or Miriam van der Lubbe and because new forms can be guaranteed.
Arco especially emphasises a detailed finish of the products because for them no detail is small. Every single piece of the Arco Collection is characterised by a simple and pure form that is why all Arco products have a big recognition value. Arco offers a big variety of different wood as well as other materials and is especially geared to the individual wishes of its customers.
Another important point for Arco is the responsible handling with materials, because, as Arco says, the natural product wood gives every piece of furniture its own personality. And if we take some time and look at some logs we will see that no log looks alike another one.
